Superfood: Wholegrains

“Superfoods” refers to foods which have a high nutrient density. They are loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Including a variety of them in our daily diet is essential as they offer unique health benefits.

The superfood featured for the month of January is wholegrains. Grains are the seeds of plants called cereals. Whole grains are grains that have all three parts intact. The three parts consist of the bran (the nutritious outer layer), the germ (the seed’s nutrient-rich embryo) and the endosperm (the germ’s food supply, which is high in carbohydrates). Examples of wholegrains include brown rice, barley, corn, quinoa and whole grain breads, noodles and pastas.
